Ionic Pro Air Purifier – Review

A purifier capable of cleaning 500ft of air for under a  $100 sounds great, doesn’t it? This is probably why the Ionic Pro air purifier is one of the best selling affordable air purifiers on the market (and the $100,000’s spent on advertising and marketing.)

Lets first look at some of the good points before we tear this machine apart:

1. Design

I’ll be honest it does look like a more expensive purifier. A couple of these towers in your bedroom might even be able to impress the ladies 😉 Obviously, time and money have gone into the overall look and design of these purifiers.

2. Affordable

Going out for a cheap family dinner now costs over a $100 so its really within the budget of anyone.

The Ionic Pro purifier is from the Marketing Geniuses at Sharper Image and its likely that you will have seen at least one of their cheesy infomercials. This company uses flashy marketing and dubious claims to ship cheap appliances en masse.

If you shop in Wal-Mart then the Ionic Pro range of purifiers is the retailer’s bestselling air purifiers.

3. No Replacement Filters

As the Ionic pro uses ionizer technology it will not require you to buy new filters as you would with a HEPA based purifier. However, you will still need to wipe down the ionizer plates every 3-5 days.

So, what wrong with the Ionic Pro?

The main problem with the Ionic pro is that its design is based on the now-defunct Sharper Image – Ionic Breeze air purifier.

When the Ionic Breeze purifier was released it was met by intense criticism by the whole air purifier review community. The Ionic Pro is 40% cheaper than the Breeze purifier and has some design modifications but the purification unit is nearly the same.

I understand that there is a market for very affordable purifiers but I just don’t think that the Ionic Pro are anywhere is anyway near as effective as other cheap purifiers such as those from Honeywell.

How did the Ionic Pro Perform on Tests?

Like with every review that we conduct at let first check the test results available:

At they tested the slightly older ionic breeze but I think the results can be comparable:

The tests show that the Ionic Breeze purifier came at the bottom of the results and the purifiers above are not $500+ models. The Honeywell hfd-120 sells on Amazon at the same price as the Ionic Pro Purifier (when bought from the company website – Amazon sells it for $50 less).

Effective Cleaning Power

If we look at the Ionic Pro company website we find the following:

They tell us that the unit can trap particles as small as 1 micron! That sounds really small but lets first check out this diagram which shows the relative sizes of airborne particles:

I normally tell people looking to buy a purifier to get a unit that is capable of at least 99.7% efficiency at removing particles bigger than 0.3 microns. When I speak to allergy sufferers I advise them to find a purifier that can deal with at least 95% of particles bigger than 0.03 microns.

Using the diagram we can see how the Ionic Pro purifier is unable to block the majority of:

  • Wood and tobacco smoke
  • Household dust
  • Bacteria
  • Dander
  • Insecticide dust
  • Fumes
  • No Viruses will ever be blocked by the Ionic Pro

I think its a little cheeky for Ionic to tell customers that their purifier will stop smoke and dust when the unit will only be capable of stopping the minority of very large smoke and dust particles.

Oh No Please Don’t Give Us Ozone

One of the main problems with the Ionic Breeze purifier was the sheer amount of ozone that was released from the unit. Ozone works by latching on to odor-causing particles and removing them. However, Ozone is a toxic gas and not something you want to be pumping into your home. Thankfully the Ionic Pro purifier releases less ozone than the Ionic breeze (48 ppb) but still releases 33 ppb. In my opinion, any release of ozone is too much!

If you looking for an affordable appliance to clean your air then please do not choose the Ionic Pro air purifier.  There are plenty of cheap air purifiers that do actually clean the air and don’t pollute your house with toxic ozone.

Update: April 2020 – this unit is no longer on sale.

AllerAir AirMedic Series: Healing Relief

Generally speaking, all purifiers are a valuable adjunct to the treatment of many respiratory conditions (especially if they are good). But AllerAir has decided to highlight this nice feature of air cleaners and created a special series – the AllerAir AirMedic.

Destined to be one of AllerAir’s best selling products, the new AirMedic is probably the most efficient model that the company has up to this time for areas up to 1500 square feet. This cylinder-shaped device with a 360° air intake system maintains a consistent flow of virtually pure air by removing all particles, gases, chemicals and odors.

AllerAir AirMedic air purifiers are easy to recognize – unlike other AllerAir units, they feature all-metal perforated casing, probably allowing the air to be sucked more easily by the filter.

Speaking of filters, the filtration system of AllerAir AirMedic purifiers does not drastically differ from the one used in AllerAir’s state-of-the-art units. It uses three levels of defense – first, the pro-dense pre-filter captures large particles and does not let them clog the HEPA. Almost all smaller-sized particles (down to 0.01 microns) are then captured by a medical grade HEPA which meets strict standards, such as the European Norm 1822.

AllerAir AirMedic units also feature neat technology around trapping odors is pretty neat. Eighteen pounds of carbon suck the smellies inside and trap them.

There are three filters in this series – the AllerAir AirMedic Exec Air Purifier, the AllerAir AirMedic D Purifier with Vocarb Carbon, AllerAir Air Medic + Vocarb UV Air Purifier. The AllerAir AirMedic Exec Air Purifier is the basic unit in this series (though it has all the features stated above).

As for the other two medical air purifiers in this series – the AllerAir AirMedic D Purifier with Vocarb Carbon and the AllerAir Air Medic + Vocarb UV Air Purifier – they come with 18 lbs of specially blended vocarb carbon, which targets and neutralizes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

And if you want some additional protection that will help you kill airborne germs, the AllerAir Air Medic + Vocarb UV Air Purifier also comes with an ultraviolet germicidal light.

If you have some medical condition which you would like to keep under control using an air purifier, one of AllerAir’s AirMedic units in the house is more than sufficient for keeping the disease under check or preventing it.

Sadly this purifier has been discontinued and no longer available for sale.

AllerAir Exec Air Purifiers: Designed to Deliver

According to ancient Romans, a name is not just a name but also a symbol, and, if so, AllerAir named their Exec purifiers just right – they are certainly able to execute and deliver.

There are a few of these babies in each series, and they certainly do not lack power – each of them is able to clean the area in a 1500 square feet area, using a four-stage filtration system. The AllerAir Exec air purifiers eliminate the three factors that contribute to poor indoor air quality – a pre-filter that traps dust, an activated carbon filter adsorbs chemicals and odors and a medical grade HEPA filter removes 99.97% of all airborne particles in the air, including particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Some of the AllerAir Exec Air purifiers, like the AllerAir 4000 Exec UV Air Purifier and the AllerAir 6000 Exec UV Air Purifier also have a germicidal UV light that kills bacteria and viruses for extra protection.

Talking about size, the 4000 Series Exec models are the smallest in this range. The units from the 5000 and 6000 Series are a little larger, respectively. This is probably due to the carbon filter – it is smaller in the older series.  For instance, the AllerAir 4000 Exec UV air purifier has a 10-lb MAC-B filter, while the carbon filter in the AllerAir 6000 weighs 24 lb.

It is only logical – the more carbon, the more micropores available, and the more effectively the filter traps chemicals and odors. The carbon filters from the 5000 Series are somewhere in between – they weigh 18 lb, like the one featured in the AllerAir 5000 Exec, but it is still a lot, compared to other those little carbon filters in most units that are practically worthless.

But the real king of the filters is the HEPA filter which removes 99.97% of 0.3 micron paticles from the air flowing through it and 100% the particles larger than 1 micron, capturing all mold spores and almost all bacteria.

If you approach everything (including the air purification system in your house) seriously, you will find the AllerAir Exec air purifiers to your taste because they are too effective to be simple home air purifiers and have an almost industrial feel to them.

AllerAir 5000 Series: Step Up in Design

The more you do something, the better you become at it. It is only logical that after launching the AllerAir 4000 series, AllerAir has progressed to a more advanced series – the AllerAir 5000 Series.

The purification system has remained basically the same – first, dust particles are captured by a pre-filter, then gases and odors are locked in by a mass activated carbon bed and mold, bacteria, and viruses are destroyed by two anti-microbial filters. And, finally, if there is anything left after that powerful attack, the powerful HEPA filter will complete the job.

What has been improved is the range of models and their designs – there are 19 models in seven colors – silver, copper, pewter, black, white, red and sandstone, in contrast to just the two colors and ten models available in the AllerAir 4000 series, meaning that you can color-coordinate your AllerAir 5000  air purifier with your interior design.

There are four larger units that can be affixed to HVAC units – the AllerAir 5000 AH Vocab, AllerAir 5000 D AH Vocab, AllerAir 5000 AH Exec, and AllerAir 5000 D AH Exec . They belong to the more expensive range of this series, since they are used mostly for businesses.

The other two unusually looking air purifiers in this series are the AllerAir 5000 W Exec and the AllerAir 5000 W Vocarb – they use a special source-capture attachment to remove the chemicals and odors directly at their source, if there is one in particular.

Overall, the price range in the AllerAir 5000 series varies from seven hundred for the AllerAir 5000 DS Exec to thirteen hundred for the AllerAir 5000 D MCS.

At least at first sight, there is no difference between them – both feature a carbon Filter, electrostatic Particle Filter, cotton pre-filter as well as a micro-HEPA filter and a UV Light as an additional option, but the more expensive one has been designed specifically for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and allergies.

All AllerAir 5000 cover quite a large area – 1500 square feet, which means that, potentially, just one air cleaner would be enough for an apartment/house with two bedrooms and baths.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with the purifiers from the AllerAir 5000 series – they are powerful, efficient and reliable devices.

AllerAir 4000 Series Air Purifiers: High-End and Reliable

Though the AllerAir 4000 series air purifiers look like small garbage cans, they make a very effective weapon against airborne chemicals, gases, odors or mold spores. These units are a happy combination of size and power – the ten air cleaners from this series are more compact than the AllerAir 5000 series air purifiers but much more powerful than the Allerair 3000 series air cleaners.

And because there are ten of them, there is an air purifier virtually for every need. The AllerAir 4000 Photocatalytic uses UV light with a special catalyst to destroy hazardous chemicals, volatile organic compounds and harsh odors. The other air purifier which also has an ultraviolet light for eliminating airborne bacteria, mold mycotoxins and other microorganisms is the AllerAir 4000 Exec UV. The UV lamp emits ultraviolet waves which destroy antigens and pathogens as they pass through them.

The AllerAir 4000 DX Vocarb, AllerAir 4000 D Vocarb and AllerAir 4000 DX Exec are especially good for absorbing harmful toxins since they features an extra deep bed carbon filter and a micro-HEPA.

The AllerAir 4000 Vocarb and the AllerAir 4000 Exec are good for getting rid of volatile organic compounds, odors and pollutants in a smaller space and have a pre-filter and a medical grade HEPA.

There are also two air purifiers for smaller homes or businesses which are compatible with all HVAC units and also feature an extra deep bed filter and a micro-HEPA filter –  the AllerAir 4000 D AH Vocarb and the AllerAir 4000 D AH Exec.

All AllerAir 4000 series air purifiers have a four-stage HEPA filtration system – the pre-filter traps large dust particles, the mass activated carbon bed filter locks in gases and odors, the two antimicrobial filters eliminate bacteria, mold, and viruses, and, finally, the HEPA filter traps airborne particles.

If you wonder about maintenance, the AllerAir 4000 filters have a good life span. You will have to change the pre-filter every three months or so, and vacuuming it might help with extending this period. The carbon filter needs replacing every 1-3 years, and, depending on usage, the HEPA filter usually lasts 3-5 years.

The air purifiers from the AllerAir 4000 series are a good choice, if you want good value, quality and industrial strength.

Surround Air Multi-Tech XJ-3000C Air Purifier

An air purifier with a true HEPA filter under $150 seems like a fairytale, but it really exists, and it is called the Surround Air Multi-Tech XJ-3000C Air Purifier. Moreover, this unit uses five other technologies – an air ionizer and negative ions, germicidal UV light, an activated carbon filter, and ozone which can be turned off.

The ozone is definitely distinguishable by smell when it is turned up high. It almost smells like a combination of seaweed, salt water and something electric. You can set the level if you don’t want so much ozone, or shut it off completely.

If you are worried that the replacement costs will be too high, as it usually goes with cheap purifiers, worry not – the replacement cost for the UV bulb and HEPA filter are small, compared to other competitors on the market of air-purification systems. The replacement lamp and filter are about $30 and need to be replaced just once a year.

You should note, however, that the Surround Air Multi-Tech XJ-3000C is shipped with the filter in place. And if you want it to pass air, you should remove a piece of cardboard from the filter first.

The great thing about this air purifier is that it works even in a large room (up to 500 square feet), if you ever need it, and you won’t have to pay the extra money for the second one.

The Surround Air Multi-Tech XJ-3000C Air Purifier has all the features an air cleaner is expected to have, and is small, quiet, and inconspicuous. On the medium setting, you will not even have to turn up the TV when it is plugged in right next to the couch you are sitting on.

If you are looking for a basic air purifier, then the Surround Air Multi-Tech XJ-3000C Air Purifier would be a good choice.  It is compact and does a great job of cleaning odors and dust, and the price is really good too.

Austin Air HealthMate HM 400: Powerful and Efficient

Cheap air purifiers often end up more expensive than the expensive ones, because you have to replace them (or filters) often. If you rather prefer expensive but solid things, the Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 is your kind of air purifier.

Even by the looks of it, you can tell that the Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 is much more powerful than your average air purifier.  It efficiently cleans up to 1500 square feet, which means that one unit would be enough to clean the air in an entire house (if it is not too big).

Plus, it is very well made. This thing is extremely sturdy and is made of heavy material. It weighs about 45 pounds, so it will not be picked up by your children without some effort, but the wheels on the bottom make it very easy to move around the house.

The Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 removes 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns in size in four stages – first, easily visible particles like dust, hair and pet dander are sucked into a prefilter, and medium-sized particles like molds, spores, pollen, even smaller ones like chemicals, gases and odors and harmful micro-organisms  (bacteria and viruses) are removed at next stages.

And while many of the cheaper units have multiple filters that have to be changed frequently, Austin Air not only claims that the HealthMate HM 400’s filter lasts for 5 years, but also provides a warranty on the filter. If you do the math, you will probably see that you could buy a new unit every five years instead of replacing the filter and still spend less when compared to many of the air purifiers with lower initial costs.

If you are worried about the sound, the Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 has three sound settings. On 1, the unit easily blends in with ambient noise. You won’t have to turn up the TV any louder and can talk normal. On 2, the TV has to be a little louder, but does not stand in the way of conversations. On 3, the unit is as noisy as an AC unit fan – quite noticeable. However, you will be able to sleep if the Austin Air will be running in your bedroom at Setting 1 and 2.

Overall, the Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 does a great job of cleaning the air and the expense is well worth it, as the quality of this product cannot be matched by less expensive purifiers.

Energy-Efficient Air Purifiers

If you want to make your home energy-efficient, trying to make your home more comfortable and become friendlier to the environment and looking for long- term financial rewards, you definitely need an energy-efficient air purifier. A power-saving air cleaner will ensure that dollars you invest in purifying the air are spent wisely.

We would like to present a few air purifiers that can save you tons of cash on your power bill.

Blueair 210B Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier

This Blueair air purifier is just what the doctor ordered – it features a true HEPA filter that cleans the air at 99.97 percent at 0.1 -micron efficiency level. It will make sure that your allergies or asthma won’t get aggravated in a room as big as 168 square feet. And, what’s important, this air cleaner has extremely low energy consumption and uses from 20 to 50 watts, depending on the efficiency level. There is a nice bonus as well – you can use Blueair 210B Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier as a night-light.

Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A

This air purifier a bit on the pricy side (about five hundred dollars), but it is worth it as it covers an area up to 815 square feet. Slim and stylish, this device cleans the air using the Signature HEPA filter, medium filter, permanent pre-filter, customized filter and washable Activated Carbon Filter in six stages. The Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A can be left freestanding or mounted to the wall, depending on your preferences. Despite its high efficiency, the device consumes eight watts at low speed and 58 watts at high speed.

Rabbit-Air-MinusA2-SPA-780ABlueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier

You will have to shell out almost nine hundred dollars for this technological wonder, but it has the best energy-efficiency characteristics – it consumes up to 95-percent less energy than other air purifiers. The unit removes particles down to 0,1 microns with efficiency 99 97% in size, and includes three HEPASilent filters. The Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier is efficient in an area up to 300 square feet and has a limited lifetime warranty.

Smoke-Eliminating Air Cleaners

Air purifiers are normally associated with allergies, but this is not the only situation when it is a good idea to get an air cleaner. Air purifiers are also an excellent solution for those people who prefer smoking indoors. Here are a few air purifiers that will help to get rid of secondhand smoke.

Blueair 203 SMOKESTOP Air Purifier

This high-quality air purifier is not only effective, but attractive in a high-tech sort of way. It will capture 99.97% of particles down to 0,1 micron size and eliminate smoke and other odors, dust mites, pollen, pet dander and mold spores. The filter cleans the air in three stages in a room up to 175 square feet – the first one entraps pollen and dust and the other two capture bacteria and viruses.

The only downside to this air cleaner is that you will have to buy the replacement filter twice a year. The removal of tobacco smoke will be more effective if use this purifier together with the200 Series SmokeStop HEPA replacement filter.Blueair 203 SMOKESTOP Air PurifierBlueair 403 SMOKESTOP Air Purifier

This is an improvement over the previous model. And like every improvement, it is more expensive ($200, to be precise).

However, the price is understandable – Blueair 403 SMOKESTOP is technically more advanced and can make the air clean in a larger area of up to 365 square feet. The air filter with carbon particles provides flawless odor and gas filtration and removes 99.97% of 0,1 micron-sized particles.Blueair 403 SMOKESTOP Air PurifierAllerair 5000 DS Exec Air Purifier – Tobacco Smoke Effects Neutralization

This is the king of smoke-eliminating air purifiers. It is too bad that the price (around $800) also reflects its superiority. This device is excellent at trapping cigarette smoke – the pre-filter captures tar and large particles, the micro-filter grabs smaller particles, the carbon filter absorbs gases, odors and chemicals and the HEPA filter finishes the cleaning job. The purifier is designed to clean a 1500 square room.

The Allerair 5000 DS Exec Air Purifier is extremely quiet but very good at removing tobacco smoke – you will hardly find anything better on the market.
