The following article is our original review of the Alen A350 Air Purifier from 2010:Alen a350 Air Purifier

PRICE = $399 (Amazon.com)

Before we start to dig deep into the pros and cons of this particular purifier. It’s worth having a look at what consumers at the major retailers think of this purifier. Most large internet retailers allow consumers the ability to provide a rating for their purchase. I use this rating as an initial way to quickly gauge the performance of an air purifier.

Review SiteRating
Amazon.com4 Stars (30 reviews)

Wize.com4.5 Stars (77 reviews)

Air Purifiers America4.5 out of 119 (10 user reviews)

The Alen a350 purifier has achieved favourable scores across a wide range of sites. I

Note: Air Purifiers America has business connections to Alen so we need to take their scores less seriously than the other more independent retailers.

The video below will take you through a sample of Amazon.com reviews so you can get an idea of what people like/dislike about it:

The next step we take for this air purifier review is to dig a little deeper into what the experts are saying about this purifier:

1. Air Purifier Power – Written By Ed Sherbenou – URL

image

Air-Purifier-Power Rating: 82, good

Benefits:

  • In recent assessments by air-purifiers-america.com this A-350 eliminated 98% of the contaminants in the device and 97% of the contaminants within the room.
  • The A 350 purifier is great at airborne dirt and dust and plant pollen elimination, yet is also competitively cost-effective costing under $300..
  • So the projected CADR (for basic comparability to mid priced store bought models without having chemical substance blocking capability ) is 203.
  • The manufacturer guarantees 95% of purchases are going to be delivered within Twenty four hours, and also features a straight forward return policy.

Problems:

  • Significant gas and smell elimination is really a necessity if health benefits can be envisioned: Models with actual carbon VOC ability position higher.
  • Alen A350 air purifier sound amounts will be over normal: 36 decibels(A)on low setting, 65 decibels(A)@214cfm on highest setting. 65 decibels(A) isn’t the loudest, but 214cfm is fairly weak for that amount of noise.
  • The organization doesn’t sell direct, yet drop ships air cleaners marketed by merchants.

2. ConsumerSearch.com: URL

csnew_logo

Provides some reservations that the A350 should only be used in smaller rooms.

Benefits:

  • Highlights that this particular purifier can be mounted on the wall
  • States that the replacement filters  are relatively cheap
  • Mentions that the A350 comes with a Lifetime warranty

Problems:

  • Talks about how come consumers mention that the power supply causes a “humming” sound
  • Indicates that this air purifier should only be used in smaller rooms

CADR Results:

Sadly the A350 has not undergone a CADR test so we can not provide this results for this test. Thankfully Ed at air-purifier-power has worked out that this purifier has a similar ranking to a CADR ranking of 203.

The Alen A350 therefore has an estimated score of: 203 CADR Ranking

Technology Used:

air-purifier_Review_particle_size

1.HEPA Filter

The Alen A350 uses one combined HEPA, carbon, and pre-filter in one unit. The only issue this raises is the price as the purifier requires this combined filter to be changed every six months. Currently, you can purchase the A350 filters on amazon.com for $49.99 which is not too bad but bear in mind that you will need to replace these twice each year – so it’s $100 per year. If I compare this with other purifiers that use Lifetime HEPA such as the Honeywell 50250-N, the A350 is considerably more costly to run.

2. Ionizer Function

One of the nice benefits of the Alen A350 is that it comes packaged with an inbuilt non-ozone ionizer unit. Normally I would suggest that people steer clear of ionizer only units but when combined with a strong HEPA filter it can help improve cleaning efficiency. The ionizer unit will charge the surrounding particles with a negative charge which will mean that these particles are heavier and thus picked up more easily by the HEPA filter. Negative ions have also been shown to imbue of sense of well being but this still has not been confirmed by scientific studies. If you are not sure about the ionizer then you can easily disable the function using the on-off switch at the top of the unit.

Power Consumption

The A350 has a Energy Star Rating which should reduce it’s electricity to just pennies per day.

Addressing the Sound Problem

Some reviews have mentioned that the A350 has a whining sound when running. In tests we came across no such noise and believe that this whining sound was down to broken air purifiers. On the highest setting the A350 creates a noise level of 65 dB which is relatively  loud. In the video below I show the Alen a350 working at each different sound level so you can evaluate if it’s too loud for your home.

Whilst the purifier is loud at the level 5 setting, it’s unlikely that you would need to leave it at this level for much time. I am quite happy with the sound output at the lowest level and so would not find a problem sleeping with it running in my bedroom.

Conclusion

This purifier provides a significant amount of cleaning for the small price of just under $400. It can be used in medium-sized rooms (400 square feet recommended) and has the ability to successfully remove all types of particles. My only issue with this purifier relates to the cost of replacement filters ($100 each year) and the lack of VOC capabilities.

When comparing with other purifiers you should make sure that you take into account the $100 a year cost as some Lifetime HEPA filters will work out far cheaper in the long-run and may outweigh the initial extra cost.

The Alen A350 air purifier is currently the highest-rated purifier in my medium range ($200-$700) purifiers and I give it a 5 star rating.

Are Air Purifiers a Waste of Money?

It might seem like a great idea to pick up a cheap air purifier whilst your doing your grocery shopping but in reality your going to waste your money.

walmart

The vast majority of air purifiers that are stocked by Walmart are under $150 and the majority sold are created by Sharper Image. The two best selling purifiers are the ionic pro combo and ionic pro mini both by Sharper image.

1. Keep Well Away from Sharper Image

sharper-image-closing

Now Sharper Image has had some bad press with their ionic breeze air purifiers after they were found to release ozone which actually reduced air quality. Now the new ionic pro models do not release as many excessive levels of ozone but they are still very inefficient.  Read the following articles about why it’s a bad idea to invest in a sharper Image purifier:

2. Can Only Remove Large Particles

HEPA_Filter_Micron_Chart

The problem with all cheap purifiers is that they can only remove a very small percentage of the particles in the air. Most of the sub $150 priced purifiers can only deal with particles that are bigger 0.3 microns. 0.3 microns is small but in the world of air based particles they only make up about 10% of pollutant particles. This means that these cheap purifiers are only able to clean 10% of the air in your room.

3. Can Only Work In Small Sealed Rooms

david-blaine-sealed-coffin

You will see that many of these units promise to clean rooms up to 250 feet but this is assuming that your room air does not circulate. As we all know, air will pass throughout the house and thus an air purifier will be required to clean the vast majority of air throughout the house. Most American houses will require an air purifier that can deal with at least 1000 feet and this is true even if you only want to clean the air in one room. Sealing your rooms is just not an option unless you really want to take one step closer to the grave!

Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner

Updated 2020

Honeywell Electronic air cleaners include the F50, F50F, F300, F300A, F300E range of furnace based whole house purifiers. These electronic whole-house air cleaners work by connecting your home’s central heating furnace/system.

Download the Honeywell manual here: http://customer.honeywell.com/techlit/pdf/PackedLit/69-0756.pdf

honeywell electronic air cleaner

If you are reading this page and looking to replace a unit, then you will be happy to know that Amazon.com still stock the F300 edition for easy replacement.

Honeywell F300E1027 Electronic Air Cleaner, 20" x 20" with Performance Enhancing Post-Filter
  • Media post-filter provides enhanced filtration on select models
  • Solid state power supply is self-regulating and maintains peak efficiency during a wide range of cell dirt loading conditions
  • Low-profile door with test button to check system operation
  • Helps filter efficiency-robbing "gunk" before it coats critical system parts
  • Very low pressure drop

The Honeywell range of electronic air cleaners comes with a 2 stage filter system that cleans the air from your furnace outlet.

1. The first stage is a pre-filter that removes most of the big particles such as lint, dust, and pet dander. If you don’t choose an air cleaner that comes with a pre-filter then you will put too much strain on the main unit. The main filter system should only be used to remove very tiny particles from 0.03 microns to 0.3 microns.

2. The Main filter system of the Honeywell electronic purifiers uses ionization technology to charge the surrounding particles. Honeywell states that their air cleaner will charge all particles that are bigger than 0.3 microns. Once each particle is charged then the Honeywell air cleaner will use charged oppositely charged plates to attract these particles and clean them from the air.

The Benefits of The Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner

  • As the system uses an ionization technology then you will not have to pay for new filters or replace them.
  • According to the manual, you will only have to wash the filter cells every 6-12 months. To be honest I doubt this a lot and will talk about this later!
  • The manual states the electronic air cleaner will remove 99% of airborne particles however it does not say the size of these particles.
  • Honeywell provides a 10-year guarantee for the coil and a 5-year guarantee for the rest of the air cleaner.

The Downside of the Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner

  • Ionization technology will attract dust and give it weight but without suitable secondary filters such as a HEPA, they can not all be removed from the air.
  • This Honeywell air cleaner only uses ionization so it will be inefficient at picking up the very smallest of air pollutant particles such as bacteria and viruses. 90% of air particles are bigger than 0.3 microns but the Honeywell range of whole house purifier is only able to pick up particles bigger than 0.3 microns.
  • We have found that ionization purifiers become very inefficient as their filter cells become dirty. We often recommend cleaning them at least once a week rather than the stated 6 months by Honeywell.
  • Whole-house air cleaners are notoriously bad at cleaning your home’s air. The problem comes down to air always following the path of least resistance. We wrote an article that explains this in more detail: Do Whole House Air Purifiers Work?

Conclusion: Choosing to replace your old F300 Electronic air cleaners might be great if you are looking to replace an existing system but if you don’t have that system in place then we would recommend going for something more portable that uses HEPA technology as it has been proven again and again to provide significant value when compared to an ionizer based system.

Original review from 2011:

Want a purifier that goes above and beyond?  Then you need a Hunter air purifier.  These purifiers are packed with power.  They aren’t too expensive and with the economy in the current shape that it’s now, no one has money to waste.

Hunter Air Purifier

Hunter air purifiers have two filters. One filter is a washable filter and the other one is an activated carbon filter. The washable filter collects large dust particles, lint, and hair.  The carbon filters out the odors that come from smoking, cooking, and pets. You should change the filters about every 3 months. These filters collect 99.97% of particles that pass through the filters.

This air purifier is rather quiet, but there is some noise. Considering all that these air purifiers do, a little noise is to be expected.  It may be a bit loud for use in a bedroom or quiet setting, so you may get better satisfaction out of the purifier by putting it in a room where the company gathers or in a room where the purifier won’t be heard very well.

An air purifier is a machine that is able to remove impurities and contaminants from the air. These purifiers are also good for your health. They are great for people with severe allergies and asthma. These hunter air purifiers have proven to reduce and even eliminate second-hand smoke from tobacco.

Air purifiers are rated on a number of things.  Every factor has a value of 10 points.  The highest score possible is 100.  It is possible to achieve the perfect score of 100, but it is highly unlikely.  If you are seeking health benefits with an air purifier, gas and odor elimination will be a must.

The way purifiers are made and designed plays a major part in how long each filter has the potential to last.  These purifiers are also rated on machine life, maintenance requirements, as well as operating costs.  The warranty period and the service life is looked at as well.  The last few factors that are considered when it comes to air purifiers are its style, portability, comfort level, and convenience.

These purifiers are still fairly new to the industrial world.  John and James Hunter founded the company in 1886.  It all began with a ceiling fan.  They didn’t begin to build air purifiers until 1990.  There is currently an air purifier that is a home edition.  This home edition line of air purifiers has been around since 2004.

Score: 87/100 [Sadly no longer on sale since 2012]

Coway Air Purifier AP-1009

Updated 2020: The Coway AP-1009 is an air purifier from 10 years ago that used a combination of HEPA and pre-filter and was a great unit at the time for fairly large rooms. If you are looking for a replacement for this unit you will be glad to know that Coway is still going and have created a great air purifier with the Coway 400:

I always recommend that you always buy from Amazon.com as they have great return policy in case you have any issues.

AIRMEGA 300S The Smarter App Enabled Air Purifier (Covers 1256 sq. ft.),Compatible with Alexa
  • Coway Airmega 300S room air purifier is designed to accommodate room sizes up to 1, 256 square feet and cleans the air at least two times per hour when used as recommended. 628 square feet and cleans the air at least four times per hour when used as recommended.
  • Coway Airmega Max2 filter—combined activated carbon and True HEPA filter—captures and reduces up to 99. 97% of 0. 3 micron particles in the air, including pollen, pollutants and other allergens. It also reduces volatile organic compounds by more than 99% and reduces fumes such as NH3 and CH3CHO. Includes washable and permanent pre-filter to catch larger dust particles.
  • Coway Airmega’s pollution sensor communicates indoor air quality testing in real-time. The brightly colored LED ring lets you know how clean or dirty your indoor air is, every minute of the day.
  • Coway Airmega has five fan modes: Smart, Sleep, Low, Medium and High. Noise level is nearly silent at lower speeds. Max noise at highest setting is 43. 2 dB.
  • Coway Airmega is a smart, energy efficient air purifier with a three-setting smart mode to adapt to its surroundings. Fan speed automatically adjusts based on the room’s air quality and lighting conditions to improve air quality.

I have decided to include some old details about the AP-1009 but be aware that it is no longer for sale.

The Coway AP-1009CH Air Purifier is built in Korea by Woongjin Coway. The brand was introduced to the U.S. in 2007, and was rebranded by retailers like Lowes and Sears. Coway dominates the air purifier market in Korea, claiming 40% of sales there. The AP-1009CH is a mid-market product at $279 and is sold by Amazon, Walmart, and AirPurifiersAmerica.com. EPA Energy Star states that the Coway AP-1009CH has a clean air delivery rate (CADR) of 186.9 for dust, 149.9 for smoke, and 203.8 for pollen (for an average of 180). These rates make this air purifier suitable for small and medium rooms.

coway_purifier
The AP-1009CH has a three-stage filter system and four fan speeds, from silent to turbo. The first filter is a washable pre-filter, which is followed by an activated carbon filter for removing odors. The main filter is a 3M HEPA filter that is designed to capture 99.97% of particles greater than 0.3 microns in size. The user manual suggests that when vacuumed regularly the HEPA filter can last up to three years. The pollution indicator is a lamp that goes from blue to red depending on air quality levels. The indicator resembles a mood ring.

This air purifier has a rounded, futuristic shape and is pitched toward women, with floral designs on the product literature. Complaints about the AP-1009CH air purifier have been few, with some users reporting a temporary odor when the machine is switched on for the first time. It is extremely quiet, at only 22.4 decibels, which is suitable for sleeping. It measures 25.8 x 14.3 x 8 inches in size and weighs 13 lbs. It stops automatically when the front cover is open or removed. This air purifier earned the EPA Energy Star rating, using only 37.8 watts on its highest setting. It comes with a one year warranty.

The bottom line is that even though the initial price may seem high, the AP-1009CH has low maintenance costs and energy consumption. It is very attractively designed and suitable for those who want clean air, but it is not powerful enough for those who have serious health issues. The washable carbon filter is fairly light-duty but can tackle odors fairly competently. It is stylishly designed, very quiet, and is considered a good value in terms of price and performance.

Pionair Air Purifier Review

Update 2020

The Pionair air purifier was released in 2004 by the company HealthQuest Technologies, LLC and they released an air purifier to US consumers.

As you can see from the Google trend graph below, there is a lot less interest now as the company no longer exists and the unit has not been on general sale since 2009.

But there must still be plenty of people who still own a Pionair purifier and it might even still work. The technology used didn’t require filters to work so it’s very unlikely to break.

Pionair

However, there is a major problem with this type of air purifier.

It uses an ultraviolet bulb that emits light with a wavelength of 185nm – which is a part of the ozone generating wavelength and this is terrible for your health and also not great at removing particles from the air (Ionizers air purifiers generate a lot of dust that doesn’t get removed but sits on surfaces.)

In the past, we assumed there was no other way to clean air cheaply but to use this type of ozone technology but in 2020 there are plenty of alternatives.

In fact, I would ask any person still running an ionizer air purifier like the Pionair air purifier then you should consider looking to replace the unit that uses a true HEPA and activated charcoal filtering system. Both of these systems have been shown to provide significant health benefits under laboratory tests and many new units don’t have to cost $100’s of dollars.

As of 2020, I recommend the following air purifier for most people:

According to the literature marketing material at the time – they described the Pionair purifier as:

“The Pionair ion purifier does not have a filter and doesn’t trap airborne particles such as pet dander or hair. In this sense, it is more like an air sterilizer than an air purifier. The Pionair uses negative ionization and photocatalysis to clean the air surrounding the machine. Prices range from approximately $400 to $600, and the machines are made in the U.S. by HealthQuest Technologies in Georgia. A purifier like the Pionair works best in humid environments where conventional high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters don’t work as well, such as damp rooms like basements and bathrooms. In these environments, mold spores and musty smells accumulate, and this is where the Pionair works best.”

The Pionair uses a photocatalytic air purifier that uses titanium dioxide as a catalyst, and an ultraviolet light bulb to create hydroxyl oxidizers. This is a fairly new technology and can be used instead of ozone. The Pionair does not have a fan but draws air in due to a chimney-like effect created by the light bulb. Because there is no fan, the clean air delivery rate is very slow. However, the Pionair is very quiet and is not designed to do the same job as a traditional HEPA air filtration system. The ultraviolet bulb used in the Pionair will have to be replaced after about a year. While the bulbs are fairly expensive, the cost is comparable to the replacement filter costs for traditional air purifiers.

Drawbacks to the Pionair purifier include the steep price compared to the size room it can treat. Also, the Pionair does produce ozone due to a wider wavelength distribution in the ultraviolet bulb. Light with a 254-nanometer wavelength is germicidal, and light with a wavelength if 185 nm is ozone generating. However, the production of a bulb that is made specifically for 254 nm is more expensive, so Pionair elected to include the 185 nm light in its bulb. The biggest drawback is that it is not designed to rid the air of particles, and often it is particles that aggravate allergies. On the other hand, HEPA air cleaners don’t do so well in damp, moldy environments like basements.

Overall, the Pionair ion air purifier is suitable for cleaning the air in fairly small rooms where particle removal is not a high priority. It is small, easily portable, and uses very little electricity (25 watts). Because there is no fan, the unit is very quiet. Though there is no filter, the ultraviolet bulb does have to be replaced periodically. Over three to five years, users will spend a comparable amount on replacement UV bulbs as they would on replacement filters for a traditional air purifier.”

Sun Pure Air Purifier

The Ultra Sun air purifier is a premium-priced air purifier that uses multiple filters as well as ultraviolet technology to clean and sanitize the air. It retails for around $600. A pre-filter removes particles larger than 5 microns in size and is easy to clean with a vacuum cleaner. Next, two layers of gas and odor absorption use activated carbon, zeolite, and potassium permanganate layers make up this filter. The HEPA filter is next. True HEPA filters remove 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in size or larger. The next step in Sun Pure’s filter system is a photocatalytic oxidation chamber. It has a titanium dioxide grid that is activated by ultraviolet light. Photocatalytic oxidation is a new enough technology that its usefulness in-home air purifiers are not really quantified yet.

sun-pure-air-purifier

One of Sun Pure’s marketing angle is that its air purifiers use photocatalytic oxidation to get rid of toxic chemicals in the air as opposed to traditional HEPA filter-based air purifiers, which use carbon filters. Though Sun Pure claims that the machines can purify the air in very large rooms, that figure is only accurate for one air change per hour, which is insufficient for most people. It does, however, purify the air in a room of 300 to 350 square feet with six air changes per hour with the machine set on its highest setting.

The Sun Pure has computerized controls that allow four speeds and seven-room sizes for a total of 28 power settings. Sensors alert the user to airborne contaminant levels with easy to understand green, yellow, and red LED displays so the user can turn the machine off if the air is already clean. The purifier also uses infrared motion detectors that turn the power down when there is less movement in the room.

The Sun Pure air purifier is not the quietest, with 68 decibels (dB) recorded on its high setting and 58 dB in the low setting. Another gripe besides the noise is that the cardboard frame holding the HEPA filter doesn’t seal securely to the chassis, potentially drawing dirty air around the HEPA filter rather than through it.

In summary, the Sun Pure air purifier is expensive but uses both HEPA filtration and photocatalytic oxidation, aimed at removing particles as well as chemicals and odors. It weighs 23 pounds and measures 21.5 x 18.9 x 8 inches, making it unsuitable for placement anywhere other than the floor. It is well made, and maintenance costs are low. Filters and UV bulbs are sold separately so that users can replace one without having to replace all consumables. Its automated controls are very appealing to some users. For those with the budget to accommodate a Sun Pure air purifier, it is certainly worth considering.

Sadly, this product has been discontinued and is no longer available for sale.

Original review from 2010:

The LifeWise Ultra 63-1530 Air Purifier retails for $150 to $200 at Radio Shack. Pre-filter replacements cost $6.25 for a two-pack, and replacement UV bulbs cost $30 for a two-pack. LifeWise is one of Radio Shack’s trademarks, and this air purifier is a KAZ model that has been rebranded for Radio Shack, and has been given a slimmer design. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers gives this product a clean air delivery rate, or CADR, of 69 for dust, 88 for pollen, and 80 for smoke. It is the right size for a small room. The 63-1530’s main selling point is that aside from the prefilter, there is no filter to replace because its main cleaning unit is an electrostatic collector rather than a HEPA filter.

Lifewise Ultra Air Purifier

With electrostatic air purifiers, impurities pass through the washable grid pre-filter, which picks up hair, lint, and larger particles. Charging wires ionize incoming air so that particles cling to the cleaning grid due to the electrical charge. It must be very consistently maintained and cleaned in order to do its job. The electrostatic cleaner is easy to vacuum, but it cannot be washed, and this means that oily airborne substances will build up. An ultraviolet light system made up of two UV lights will reduce the number of airborne germs in the exhaust. The power of the UV lamps is not published.

Users who buy the LifeWise Ultra 63-1530 do not like that it has to be kept meticulously clean or else it loses its efficiency. The overall rating for this model from the Radio Shack website is three stars out of a possible five. The UV purifier is not strong enough to do much in the way of disinfecting, but that is true of many home air purifiers that use UV technology. Users do like how quiet the machine is, saying it is easily quiet enough to sleep next to. These purifiers do release a certain amount of ozone, below the 0.050 parts per million that is the standard for medical devices. Users with asthma or heart disease are advised to consult their doctors before using any ozone-emitting air purifier.

Overall, this is a compact machine, at 10.75 x 16.5 x 9.25 inches, weighing about 10 lbs. It comes with a five-year warranty exclusive of filters. While the idea of not having to replace HEPA filters is very appealing to some consumers, users must know that they have to clean the electrostatic grid often and thoroughly to prevent it from clogging up.

Sadly this purifier has been discontinued and no longer available for sale.

Amcor Air Purifiers – What you need to know in 2020

Amcor air purifiers are a range of air purifiers that were released in 2006 but went bust in 2009 after realizing a range of air purifiers.

Amcor air purifiers used a range of technologies but most were inoizer heavy with the best example would be the HT2000 that was hepa and ionizer.

The company existed as an LTD based in NY with offices in Europe, US and Africa.

Amcor-Air-Purifier

Air purifiers can be very expensive, and those who can’t afford $500 or $1,000 for an air purifier may consider an Amcor purifier to be a good choice. The models they make are simpler, with fewer settings, but they do remove dust and particles from the air and use washable filters so filter replacement costs don’t add up like they do with some air purifiers.

The three most popular Amcor models are the AM-90, the AM-40, and the AM-70 Ficus Tree air purifier. Another addition to the Amcor lineup was the ionizer model ht2000. In general, I recommend avoiding ionizer air purifiers unless you have a specific need case.

The Amcor AM-90 is rated to clean the air in a room of up to 400 square feet and uses a measly 44 watts. It has a HEPA filter, which removes over 99% of airborne particles of 0.3 microns or larger in diameter. Users report that it is quiet and that they like being able to wash the filter up to eight times before having to replace it. The AM-90 has three speeds with electronic controls that include a clock. It has an eight-hour timer and retails for about $109. The AM-90 measures 7 x 14.5 x 19.75 inches and comes with a one-year limited warranty.

A smaller, simpler model made by Amcor is the AM-40. It is similar to the AM-90, but has only two speeds rather than three. It has a carbon pre-filter that absorbs odours, a washable five-layer filter, plus a fragrance dispenser. It works in a smaller room than the AM-90, and users report that it runs quietly. Measuring 11 x 9 x 6 inches, it retails for around $50.

The Amcor AM-70 is unique in that it is made to look like a small ficus tree. It is designed for small to medium-sized rooms of up to 240 square feet. Like the AM-40, it has a five-layer washable filter. This air purifier uses a carbon filament to clean the air, and it ionizes the air. The AM-70 has a high and a low setting and measures approximately 14.5 x 14.5 x 46 inches.

Sadly all Amcor air purifiers are now discontinued (as of 2020) and no longer available for sale.

But if you are interested in finding units that are very similar the Amcor units, then check out my current updated guide for 2020:

Brookstone Air Purifier – One to Avoid

Did you know that Brookstone (the guys that seem to have shops in every airport) used to sell air purifiers back in 2010. It was not a great unit and thankfully as of 2020, Brookstone no longer sells any air purifiers.

Many of the brookstone air purifiers utilised ionizer technology such as the Pure-Ion Advanced Air Cleaner.

Ionizer used ionised particles to turn posistive to negative and the metal fins can attract the dust. They can sometimes release small amounts of ozone so are no longer the norm for most people.

PRICE = $199.95 (Amazon.com) as of 2010

It’s best to first check what the major internet buying consumers think about this air purifier. Many large retailers provide their consumers with the ability to rate/review their purchases. We can use these consumer reviews to quickly gauge the general opinion about this Brookstone purifier.

Review SiteRating
Amazon.com3.5 Stars (3 reviews)
Epinions.com4.5 Stars (4 reviews)
Shopping.com3 Stars (2 reviews)

I am not happy with the number of reviews that are available for this particular purifier. The problem is that when there are only a few reviews, it easy for marketers/manufacturers to publish their own positive reviews that can affect the overall score.

I can not prove that people connected to Brookstone have been publishing false reviews but I will outline some of what I have found out and you can make your own decision.

First review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop snoring and breathe better., January 23, 2010

By
Internet shopper “Mike” (New Hampshire, USA) –

Total word count: 900+ words

image

My problem with this review is how detailed it is. It has over 900 words which is impressive for just a normal consumer. I could understand this review being so long if he actually had some sort of grievance or point to make but he just provides a very “professional” review.  This Brookstone purifier review just reads like a marketing message that you would find on a retailers website or the script from a cheesy infomercial.

However, you should read the review and decide for yourself.

Second Review

1.0 out of 5 stars filter breaks easily with no replacement sold, August 8, 2009

Barry Obama “2 bigg 2 fail” (DC) – See all my reviews

image

This review looks more real and I can understand why the reviewer has taken the time to write it. They had a grievance with their Brookstone purifier breaking and tells us that the metal fins might not be dishwasher safe. We usually expect that a small number of purifiers will break so this does mean that other customers will have the same problem.

Third Review

5.0 out of 5 stars I have 2 of these and I like the results!, February 22, 2010

By
Bold Consumer (Oklahoma City, OK USA) – See all my reviews

image

Another 5 star review is highly positive. I clicked through to find out what other products this person has reviewed.

image

Wait, is that 3 reviews in just one day! All the products on the first few pages related to DVD’s that people use when riding their bike indoor which are all sold by third-party sellers. I would suggest that this person is a professional Amazon reviewer and provide reviews for $. I suggest you have a look and decide for yourself.

Conclusion Retailer Reviews

I would be very wary of purchasing one of these air purifiers based on the fake reviews and lack of honest positive reviews that are available. The negative review are also very negative relating to the purifier breaking or causing particle build-up that makes breathing problems worse.

The next step we take for this air purifier review is to dig a little deeper into what the experts are saying about this purifier:

After reading a couple of different sources (there really is not much about Brookstone purifiers on the net), it seems that the Brookstone air cleaner uses the same technology that was used in the now-bankrupt Sharper Image purifiers.

When we read the technical details about the Brookstone purifier, it talks about the high CADR rating but then when we click to find out the CADR details we are taken to this page:

image

It seems that Brookstone doesn’t want to publish their CADR rating as its missing from the product information page.

From what I can tell this Brookstone purifier is that it uses an ionization unit primarily than an ozone release as part of its cleaning process. Ozone is a toxic gas and I would recommend that you should keep well away from any purifier that uses it. This is especially true if you have pets, children, or elderly people living in your house. You can read more about the dangers of purifiers that use ozone at the EPA government website.

Conclusion

This purifier has a large number of dubious reviews and its technology is both antiquated and dangerous. I would seriously suggest that consumers look elsewhere to find a cheap air purifier. With a budget of $200, there is still a lot of purifiers that will clean the air and not harm your health: Air purifiers for less than $200

We give the Brookstone Air purifier 0 Stars and recommend that consumers keep well away.

In 2020 no Brookstone air purifiers are available for sale but please feel free to check out the list of my current favorite below:
